Thanksgiving Week in San Antonio: Free Food Day by Day (Nov 23–29, 2026)

A San Antonio family table set for Thanksgiving week — a turkey dinner, grocery bags, and a calendar open to November 23–29

Thanksgiving Day gets all the attention — but nobody eats just one day. The week around Thursday, November 26, 2026 is when pantries run special holiday distributions, regular schedules shift without much warning, and a lot of neighbors quietly go without because they only planned for the holiday itself. This planner walks the whole week, Monday, November 23 through Sunday, November 29: what is serving each day, what is closed, and the doors that never close at all.

If you only need the big day, start with our guide to free Thanksgiving dinner in San Antonio. This page covers everything around it — the stock-up days before, and the quiet days after.

Three honest things to know before the day-by-day

  • Monday through Wednesday is your stock-up window. Most regular pantries and meal programs run on their normal schedules early in the week. That's when to get groceries to cook at home.
  • Thanksgiving Day belongs to the big dinner and the every-day doors. Most pantries close on Thursday — some say so plainly in their listings (Presa Community Center's pantry, for example, lists holiday closures). Thursday's section below has the places that do serve.
  • Friday is a gray zone. Many pantries stay closed the day after Thanksgiving, and even programs with regular Friday hours can change them on a holiday week. The San Antonio Food Bank had not posted Thanksgiving-week closures or special hours when we checked — so call before you go, anywhere, all week.

Before the week: Friday, November 20

The week really starts the Friday before, with a big grocery distribution and two calls worth making early.

  • Salvation Army Center of Hope food distribution — Friday, November 20, 2026, 8:30 AM–12:30 PM. Listed on the Salvation Army's official San Antonio listings. Call the Army before you go to confirm what to bring.
  • San Antonio Food Bank holiday distributions. The Food Bank and its partner pantries hand out turkey and holiday grocery bags in the weeks before Thanksgiving. Curbside distributions are registration-gated through the Food Bank's Fresh Trak system — there's no static schedule published, so call Client Services at 210-431-8326. Walk-ins are welcome at Food Bank HQ, 5200 Historic Old Hwy 90, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
  • Homebound? Make the call this week. In past years, United Way and 2-1-1 coordinated free meal delivery to homebound neighbors on Thanksgiving Day — and in past years, registration closed about a week before Thanksgiving. Call 2-1-1 (free, answered 24/7) and ask about this year's sign-up.

Monday, November 23 — a take-home turkey, plus a full regular day

Thanksgiving in the Barrio — Monday, November 23, 2026. The Cesar E. Chavez Legacy & Educational Foundation's annual event gives families a turkey and trimmings to take home and cook. It runs every year on the Monday before Thanksgiving; the 2026 location and family sign-up details hadn't been announced yet when we checked — we'll add them here when the foundation posts them.

Monday is also a full regular service day — the best day of the week to stock up while everything is open:

  • Corazón Day Center & Resource Hub — hot lunch 12:00–1:00 PM (center open 8:30 AM–4:00 PM), 504 Avenue E — 210-238-5958
  • Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM) — sack lunches 9:00–11:00 AM, 110 McCullough Ave — 210-223-4099; CAM's grocery help runs Monday–Thursday 9:30 AM–3:00 PM
  • Catholic Charities pantries — St. Stephen's CARE Center and Guadalupe Community Center, Monday–Friday 8:30 AM–5:00 PM — 210-226-6178
  • Presa Community Center Emergency Food Pantry — Monday–Friday 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, walk-ins welcome — 210-532-5295
  • St. Vincent de Paul — Our Lady of Perpetual Help — Mondays 10:00 AM–2:00 PM — 210-255-8225
  • Senior lunches — House of Neighborly Service serves lunch 11:00 AM–12:00 PM on weekdays (407 N Calaveras St, 210-434-2301), and Ella Austin Community Center serves weekday noon meals for seniors (1023 N Pine St, 210-224-2351 — call to confirm the day's serving time)

And the every-day doors in Thursday's section below serve Monday too — they serve every day.

Tuesday, November 24 — the big grocery day

  • Baptist Temple Church Food Distribution Center — distribution 9:00 AM–1:00 PM, 901 E Drexel Ave — 210-533-7114 (call to confirm — hours can vary)
  • St. Vincent de Paul — St. Monica — food help by appointment, Tuesday–Thursday 10:00 AM–1:00 PM — 210-658-8791
  • Everything in Monday's list runs again today: Corazón's lunch, CAM's sack lunches and groceries, the Catholic Charities and Presa pantries, and the senior lunches.

Tuesday is a strong day to finish your stock-up. After Wednesday, the week's options narrow fast.

Wednesday, November 25 — the last normal day

  • Fellowship Meal — a free community dinner every Wednesday, 6:00–8:00 PM, 5114 Seguin Rd
  • St. Vincent de Paul — Our Lady of Perpetual Help — Wednesdays 10:00 AM–2:00 PM — 210-255-8225
  • The regular weekday doors — Corazón, CAM, the pantries, the senior lunches — run on their normal schedules.

One caution: the day before Thanksgiving is when some programs quietly shorten their hours, and the Food Bank had not posted special Thanksgiving-week hours when we checked. If Wednesday is your stock-up day, go early in the day — and call ahead if the trip is long.

Thursday, November 26 — Thanksgiving Day

The 47th Annual Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner. A San Antonio tradition since 1979, the Jimenez dinner serves tens of thousands of free turkey dinners — turkey, stuffing, sides, and dessert — on Thanksgiving Day. The organizer's own site confirms the 47th annual dinner is on for 2026 and that it feeds more than 25,000 neighbors, most of them seniors, with more than 4,000 volunteers making it happen.

  • When: Thursday, November 26, 2026 (Thanksgiving Day)
  • Where: Not yet posted for 2026 when we checked on Oct 24 — recent years filled the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center downtown. We update this page the moment the organizer posts the 2026 venue and serving hours.
  • Cost: Free — in past years the doors were open to everyone, no ticket needed

Want to help instead? Volunteer registration opens in late October 2026 — check the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County volunteer page to sign up for a shift.

Thanksgiving morning, before the meal: the San Antonio Food Bank's Turkey Trot 5K runs 8:00–11:30 AM at the Commander's House, 633 S. Flores St. It's a run, not a meal — but it's the morning's big community gathering, and it's on the Food Bank's official events calendar.

The doors that serve on Thanksgiving Day itself — these meal programs serve every day of the year, holidays included:

  • Faith Kitchen at Haven for Hope — breakfast 7:00–8:00 AM, lunch 11:30 AM–12:30 PM, dinner 5:00–6:00 PM, every day of the year, 1 Haven for Hope Way — 210-220-2100 (first visit? The Haven for Hope intake desk runs Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM)
  • St. Vinny's Bistro — three hot meals every day, 365 days a year, 1 Haven for Hope Way — 210-919-3195 (call for today's exact meal times)
  • Communities Under the Bridge — hot dinner 6:00–7:00 PM every evening, 724 Chestnut St — 210-569-4026
  • San Antonio Rescue Mission — a light breakfast in the morning and a hot evening meal about 7:30–8:00 PM nightly, after the chapel service, 907 E Quincy St — 210-222-9736

Most food pantries are closed today. Don't make a long trip to a pantry door on Thanksgiving Day without calling first.

Friday, November 27 — the gray zone

Friday is the day this planner exists for. Many pantries stay closed the day after Thanksgiving, and holiday-week hours are exactly the kind that change without a post anywhere. Here's what you can count on, and what to check:

  • Count on the every-day doors. Faith Kitchen, St. Vinny's Bistro, Communities Under the Bridge, and San Antonio Rescue Mission serve Friday on the same schedule as Thursday — every day means every day.
  • Comfort Cafe (Bandera Rd) — opens its weekend run Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM, 6812 Bandera Rd — 210-501-9719. Comfort Cafe serves Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  • Regular Friday programs — call first. Corazón's weekday lunch and CAM's sack lunches (Monday–Saturday, 9:00–11:00 AM) run on those schedules most weeks, but a holiday Friday is the exception that proves the rule. A two-minute call beats a wasted trip.
  • Stuck? Call 2-1-1. The helpline answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — including holidays — and can tell you what's actually open near you that day.

Saturday, November 28 — the weekend doors open

  • Christ Episcopal Church — Sidewalk Saturday — free groceries 8:30–10:30 AM at the Outreach Pavilion, 510 Belknap Pl
  • Baptist Temple Church Food Distribution Center — 9:00 AM–1:00 PM, 901 E Drexel Ave — 210-533-7114 (call to confirm)
  • Christian Assistance Ministry — sack lunches 9:00–11:00 AM, 110 McCullough Ave — 210-223-4099
  • Comfort Cafe — 8:00 AM–4:00 PM, 6812 Bandera Rd — 210-501-9719
  • Taking It to the Streets — free downtown dinner every Saturday night, served at 6:00 PM, rain or shine, 724 Chestnut St — 210-827-0398
  • The every-day doors serve as always — and the San Antonio Food Bank's phone line is open Saturdays 9:00 AM–3:00 PM at 210-337-3663 if you need to plan ahead.

Our Saturday guide has the full Saturday list, all year long.

Sunday, November 29 — the thinnest day

Sunday is the quietest day of the week for free food — which is why Saturday's groceries matter. What serves on Sunday:

  • Faith Kitchen at Haven for Hope — breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the same hours as every day — 210-220-2100
  • St. Vinny's Bistro — three meals, every day — 210-919-3195
  • Comfort Cafe — the last day of its weekend run, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM — 210-501-9719
  • Communities Under the Bridge — dinner 6:00–7:00 PM — 210-569-4026
  • San Antonio Rescue Mission — evening meal about 7:30–8:00 PM — 210-222-9736

Our Sunday guide covers Sundays year-round. And by Monday, November 30, regular schedules are back.

The doors that never close

If you remember nothing else from this page, remember these. They serve on Thanksgiving Day, the day after, and every day around them:

  • Faith Kitchen at Haven for Hope — three meals a day, every day of the year — 210-220-2100
  • St. Vinny's Bistro — three meals a day, 365 days a year — 210-919-3195
  • Communities Under the Bridge — dinner every evening, 6:00–7:00 PM — 210-569-4026
  • San Antonio Rescue Mission — an evening meal every night — 210-222-9736
  • 2-1-1 Texas — free help by phone, 24/7, holidays included — call 2-1-1

Beyond the holidays, the same doors keep serving — and San Antonio Benefits' free eligibility checker can match your household to programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and housing help in about 2 minutes.
