Free Christmas Toys in San Antonio 2026: Where to Apply Before the Deadlines

Here's the thing about free Christmas toys: the programs that give them away do most of their sign-ups in the fall, not December. By the time the tree goes up, many lists are already full. If money is tight this year and you want gifts under the tree for your kids, the time to act is now — October and November, not Christmas week.
Three big programs help San Antonio families with toys and gifts. Each one works differently, so read carefully — one of them takes applications from parents, and one of them doesn't take applications at all.
Toys for Tots (Bexar County) — you apply online
Toys for Tots is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, and it gives new, unwrapped toys to children in the community. Families request toys at toysfortots.org — look for "Request a Toy," and the site routes you to the local Bexar County campaign.
When we checked on October 24, 2026, the Bexar County campaign's 2026 sign-up window had not been posted yet. That is exactly why you should check the site now and keep checking: local windows open quietly and close early, often well before December. Don't wait for an announcement that may never come — go look today.
Salvation Army Angel Tree — watch for the San Antonio sign-up window
Angel Tree matches children with donors who buy gifts for them — clothes, toys, and wish-list items. The Salvation Army's San Antonio command runs Angel Tree here, and its own site has a "Christmas Assistance Registration" page at salvationarmysanantonio.org.
One honest warning: San Antonio's exact 2026 registration dates are printed in the Salvation Army's flyers, not in the page text — so we can't print dates here that we haven't been able to read and verify. Check their Angel Tree page, or call the San Antonio command, and ask when Christmas Assistance registration opens. If you see dates for other Texas cities online, don't assume San Antonio uses the same ones — each city sets its own window.
Elf Louise Christmas Project — no application, and here's why
Elf Louise is a beloved San Antonio tradition: volunteers wrap gifts and Santa delivers them to children's homes. The project delivers wrapped toys to more than 36,000 children, with Santa delivery days this year on December 12, 13, 19, and 20, 2026. The workshop is at 301 S. Flores St, and the project's site is elflouise.org.
But here's what most people don't know: there is no public application for Elf Louise. Families do not sign up directly. Children are chosen through more than 200 partner agencies — schools, churches, and social-service agencies — that know the families they serve. So the way in is through people who already know your family: ask at your child's school, your church, or an agency that helps your household, and tell them you'd like to be considered for Elf Louise.
Toys are not meals — cover both
These programs give gifts, not food. If the December grocery budget is also stretched thin, San Antonio churches and nonprofits serve free holiday dinners too — see our guide to free Christmas dinner in San Antonio, and our meal finder for the 131 verified free-food places serving all year. And if your family could use help beyond the holidays, San Antonio Benefits' free eligibility checker takes about 2 minutes and matches your household to programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and housing help.
If you miss a window
- Call 2-1-1. The free 2-1-1 Texas helpline answers 24/7 and can point you to local churches, nonprofits, and toy drives that still have room.
- Ask your child's school. Counselors often know about smaller local drives — and, as above, schools are one of the ways families get picked for Elf Louise.
- Join the free email alerts. When holiday sign-ups, giveaways, and deadlines are announced in San Antonio, that's where we send the word first — in time to act, not after the fact.
Program details checked October 24, 2026, against each organization's own pages. Sign-up windows change every year — confirm on the program's site before you go.
