Free Día de los Muertos in San Antonio 2026: Muertos Fest, Altars & Family Events (Oct 23 – Nov 2)

Every year, San Antonio holds one of the largest Día de los Muertos celebrations in the United States — and the biggest events are free. From Friday, October 23 through the observance on November 1–2, families can see more than 80 community altars, join two processions, hear live music on five stages, and be part of a tradition that has filled Hemisfair since 2013. This year's theme says it plainly: Remember. Honor. Celebrate.
Here is the free guide, day by day.
1. Muertos Fest at Hemisfair — the headline event (FREE)
Hemisfair, downtown San Antonio — admission is free all three days.
- Friday, Oct 23, 5:00–11:00 PM — "¡Presente! A Night to Remember." Sensory-friendly altar viewing from 5:00–7:00 PM (quieter, lower-crowd — the best window for young kids and anyone who needs a calmer visit), plus a Goodwill San Antonio fashion show that evening.
- Saturday, Oct 24, 10:00 AM–11:00 PM — full festival day; Día de los Muertos procession at 7:00 PM.
- Sunday, Oct 25, 12:00–9:00 PM — procession at 3:00 PM.
What you'll find: 80+ community-created altars (ofrendas), five stages of live music and performance, and the Muertos Mercado with 75+ local art vendors. The festival draws more than 100,000 people — go early in the day if crowds are hard for your family.
Getting there: parking downtown is limited during the festival — VIA transit is the easy way in. The festival is rain or shine, and chairs and coolers are not permitted.
One honest note: festival food and drinks are sold by vendors — they are not free. If your family needs a free meal the same day, our directory of 100 verified free-meal and pantry places in San Antonio is open every day of the festival.
2. Historic Market Square — Oct 24–25 (FREE)
Market Square holds its own Día de los Muertos celebration in the heart of El Mercado — free both days: Saturday, Oct 24, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM and Sunday, Oct 25, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM. Expect community altars, live mariachi and ballet folklórico, the Las Monas Cultural Dance Procession (1:00–2:00 PM both days), a Blessing of the Animals, a marigold giveaway, children's activities, and free workshops.
3. Día de los Muertos at Pearl — Oct 27 – Nov 3 (FREE)
Pearl's celebration runs a full week, October 27 – November 3, and Pearl's own site states it plainly: free and open to the public. Across the Pearl grounds you'll find community ofrendas, live music and performances, children's activities, and art installations — including five 4-foot calaveras painted live by local artists, on display October 23 – November 5. (Pearl's restaurants also run their own ticketed holiday dinners that week — those are separate paid events, not part of the free celebration.)
4. November 1–2: the observance itself
Día de los Muertos is, at its heart, a family observance: Nov 1 honors children who have died, Nov 2 honors adults. Families build ofrendas — altars with photos, candles, marigolds (cempasúchil), and the favorite foods of the people they are remembering — and visit cemeteries to clean, decorate, and spend time at graves.
If you are visiting as a respectful guest:
- You are welcome to look, learn, and remember your own people.
- Ask before photographing a family's altar or grave — these are personal, not displays.
- Keep voices low at cemeteries, and leave everything exactly as you found it.
5. Food traditions sidebar (paid — labeled honestly)
Pan de muerto is the season's bread — a soft, orange-blossom sweet bread made only for these weeks. La Panadería serves its pan de muerto October 15 – November 2, including a black Totomoxtle version, with altars on site. This is a bakery purchase, not a free item — we list it because for many families, bringing pan de muerto home is the celebration.
