The 2026 turkey price board is officially open, and the early numbers are kind to San Antonio budgets. Walmart is leading at $0.84 per pound for Shady Brook Farms frozen turkey, according to the season's first national price roundup. If you're planning Thanksgiving on a tight budget, here's what's confirmed, what's likely still coming, and the smartest way to play it.

The 2026 price board so far

Early-season prices spotted nationally and in Texas stores:

  • Walmart — Shady Brook Farms frozen turkey, $0.84/lb (current board leader)
  • Walmart — Butterball whole frozen turkey, $0.97/lb (lowest since 2019)
  • Kroger — Kroger brand whole frozen turkey, $0.98/lb

At $0.84/lb, a 14-pound turkey — plenty for 10 people with leftovers — costs under $12. That's the price to beat right now.

Why November usually brings deeper cuts

Here's the pattern worth knowing: October prices are the opening prices, not the final ones. Grocery chains use turkey as a loss leader to pull holiday shoppers through the door, and the real undercutting happens in the two weeks before Thanksgiving. Last year, Meijer bottomed out at $0.32/lb with a coupon — less than half of today's best price.

So should you buy now or wait? Our take:

  • Buy now if you have freezer space and spot $0.84/lb or better. Frozen turkeys keep for months, and you lock in the price and the size you want.
  • Wait if you're willing to watch the ads through mid-November. The deepest doorbuster prices reward patient shoppers — but popular sizes sell out.
  • Either way, check H-E-B's ad when it drops. H-E-B hasn't announced 2026 Thanksgiving pricing yet, and their store-brand turkey historically undercuts the national chains in San Antonio.

Still to come for 2026

Not yet announced: H-E-B, Aldi, and Target Thanksgiving deals. Last year Aldi sold Jennie-O whole turkey at $0.77/lb and Target's Good & Gather bird went for $0.79/lb plus Circle-member grocery coupons. We'll update our Thanksgiving grocery deals guide as each store announces — check back in early November.

Stretch the bird further

  • Right-size it. Plan about 1 to 1.5 pounds per person. A 13–15 lb turkey feeds 10 with leftovers; don't buy a 22-pounder for six people.
  • Use the whole bird. The carcass makes a rich stock for soup, and leftover meat stretches into tacos, pot pie, and sandwiches for days.
  • Pair with pantry staples. Our food finder lists free pantries across San Antonio — canned goods, broth, and baking supplies can come free, leaving your cash for the turkey.

When even $0.84/lb is too much

No shame in it — that's exactly what the free-meal network is for. San Antonio's free Thanksgiving dinners and turkey giveaways ramp up every November, and our open-now page shows what's serving today. A full holiday plate is waiting either way.
