Free Food in December: San Antonio's December 2026 Calendar

Bags and boxes of free groceries lined up for neighbors at a December food distribution in San Antonio

December stretches a grocery budget like no other month. School lets out, work hours get cut, and the heating bill arrives — all at the same time. The good news: December is also full of free food help in San Antonio, if you know where the dates are. This page is that calendar.

Here is how to use it. First come the December dates that are already set. Then come the two big events whose exact San Antonio dates had not been announced yet when we checked on October 31, 2026 — we say so plainly instead of guessing. Last are the pantries and meal doors that serve every week of the year, December included. Anything on this page with a date and a time was checked against the organizer's own page.

Tuesday, December 1 — GivingTuesday, and the month opens

December starts with GivingTuesday (Tuesday, December 1), the day San Antonio's food charities ask neighbors who can give to step up. If that is you this year, our GivingTuesday guide shows where a small gift does the most good locally.

If you need food, December 1 still matters: it is the week the month's distribution calendars start to fill in. The San Antonio Food Bank posts its distributions on freshtrak.com — search by your ZIP code, and check back through the month as new dates are added. Its Client Services team also answers Monday to Friday at 210-431-8326.

Wednesday, December 9 — a drive-thru distribution you can circle now

One December distribution is already on the books. Southwest ISD teams up with the San Antonio Food Bank for a monthly drive-thru food distribution, and December's date is Wednesday, December 9, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM — or until supplies last — at Southwest Legacy High School (SWLHS). The district's own Food & Clothing Closet page lists the date, and its Pupil Services office takes questions at 210-622-4330. Drive-thru lines can start early, and "until supplies last" means exactly that — plan to arrive near the start.

The Food Bank's big December distributions — dates post as the month gets closer

Here is the honest part: when we checked the San Antonio Food Bank's public calendar on October 31, it ran through December 1, and no December distribution dates had been posted yet. That is normal — the Food Bank adds its large distributions as the month approaches, and holiday distributions are usually announced in late November.

So do not wait on this page. The Food Bank points neighbors to freshtrak.com to find upcoming distributions, read the details, and register for the ones that ask for registration. You can also walk in at Client Services, 5200 Historic Old Hwy 90, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or call 210-431-8326. And join our free email alerts — when the December dates post, that is where we send them first.

H-E-B Feast of Sharing — San Antonio is on the December list (date still to come)

The Feast of Sharing is H-E-B's giant free holiday dinner — a festive meal, open to everyone, served by volunteers in cities across Texas. H-E-B's official 2026 calendar lists San Antonio in December 2026. But when we checked that calendar on October 31, the exact San Antonio date and venue had not been posted yet — some cities have their dates; ours does not, yet.

When H-E-B announces it, the date will appear on its Feast of Sharing calendar. We are watching for it, and we will update this page and send it to our email alerts list as soon as it is official. Do not trust a date you see shared on social media until it matches H-E-B's own calendar — old years' dates travel fast.

Christmas week — dinners, food boxes, gifts, and the doors that never close

Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026. The holiday pieces fit together like this:

  • A sit-down Christmas dinner: churches and nonprofits serve free holiday dinners — see our guide to free Christmas dinner in San Antonio for what is planned and how these dinners work.
  • A box of groceries to cook at home: holiday food boxes need sign-ups, and the windows close before Christmas week — see how to sign up for a free holiday food box and register early.
  • Gifts for the kids: toy programs are gifts, not food — our Christmas toys guide explains Toys for Tots, Angel Tree, and Elf Louise.
  • Kids home from school: when school closes for winter break, the free school meals pause too — our winter break guide covers feeding kids through the break.
  • The Salvation Army: its San Antonio Christmas Assistance registration is the holiday door for gifts and seasonal help. When we checked on October 31, the Salvation Army had not posted a separate December food-distribution schedule — so ask about food help when you register, or call 2-1-1 for a church food box near you.

And one door never closes at all: Faith Kitchen at Haven for Hope serves three free hot meals every day of the year, Christmas Day included — breakfast 7:00–8:00 AM, lunch 11:30 AM–12:30 PM, and dinner 5:00–6:00 PM, at 1 Haven for Hope Way. Questions go to Haven for Hope Intake at 210-220-2100. No questions asked, no holiday exception.

Every week in December — the standing doors

Big events get the headlines, but most December food help is quiet and weekly. These verified doors serve all month long. Holiday weeks can shift a schedule, so call before you go — that is good advice in December most of all.

  • Every day — Faith Kitchen at Haven for Hope: three hot meals a day, every day of the year (see Christmas week, above).

That is a sample, not the whole map — our meal finder lists 131 verified free-food places across San Antonio, searchable by neighborhood and day of the week.

If December still comes up short

  • Call 2-1-1. The free 2-1-1 Texas helpline answers 24/7 and knows the small church distributions and one-day holiday giveaways that never make a calendar like this one.
  • Check the finder again mid-month. December dates keep posting through the month — the meal finder and freshtrak.com are the two places to re-check each week.
  • Join the free email alerts. When December dates, holiday sign-ups, and one-day giveaways are announced, that is where we send the word first.
  • Look past December. If the tight month is a tight year, San Antonio Benefits' free eligibility checker takes about 2 minutes and matches your household to programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and housing help.
