Double Up Food Bucks in San Antonio: Double Your SNAP Dollars for Fresh Produce

If you shop with a Lone Star Card, there is a program in San Antonio that quietly doubles what your benefits buy in fresh fruits and vegetables. It's called Double Up Food Bucks, it runs at farmers markets, mobile markets, and select stores across the city, and if you're already on SNAP you're already enrolled — no application, no extra card, no paperwork.
How it works
Spend SNAP dollars on fresh produce at a participating location and the program matches you dollar for dollar in Double Up Food Bucks to spend on more fresh fruits and vegetables. At farmers markets, you check in at the market's booth first: they run your Lone Star Card, hand you market tokens for your shopping plus matching Double Up tokens for produce. At participating grocery stores, the match typically comes off at the register. Daily match limits vary by location, so ask at the booth or the register what today's cap is before you shop.
Where to use it in San Antonio
Participating spots around the city include the Pearl Farmers Market, the San Antonio Food Bank's farmers markets at Mission Marquee Plaza and Pica Pica Plaza, the Food Bank's Mobile Mercado stops, and Chicho Boys Fruit Market on the Westside — among others. The list grows and shifts by season, so check the current locations before you go: the City of San Antonio's Metro Health program runs Double Up locally and keeps the official Double Up Food Bucks page, and Double Up Texas (run statewide by the Sustainable Food Center) lists every participating market and store.
Why November is the month to try it
Thanksgiving cooking is produce cooking — sweet potatoes, green beans, onions, apples, greens. A dollar-for-dollar match turns a $15 produce run into $30 of ingredients, which is exactly the part of the holiday meal that food boxes don't always cover. If you've never used the program, a Saturday market run this month is the easiest first try: bring your Lone Star Card, stop at the booth before you shop, and let the staff walk you through it once.
Good to know
- The match is for fresh fruits and vegetables — that's what Double Up tokens buy.
- Farmers-market Double Up tokens generally don't expire — if you don't spend them all, keep them for next time (ask at your market to confirm).
- Double Up stacks with your regular SNAP: your benefits still buy everything they normally buy; the match is extra produce money on top.
- Not on SNAP yet? The San Antonio Food Bank offers free application help, and our free fresh produce guide lists no-cost produce options that need no benefits at all.
