San Antonio Food Bank: How to Get Free Food (What to Expect)

Volunteers handing boxes of free groceries to neighbors at a San Antonio Food Bank distribution

The San Antonio Food Bank is the biggest name in local hunger relief — and one of the most misunderstood. It isn't a single soup kitchen; it's a hub that moves food through a network of partners, and also serves neighbors directly. Here's how to get help from it.

What the Food Bank actually does

The Food Bank does two things at once. It supplies a network of partner pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters across San Antonio and the surrounding counties — many of the places in our directory get food through this network. And it runs its own distributions and assistance programs directly from its headquarters.

You don't need to understand the whole system. You just need to know the two doors: visit a partner pantry near you, or go straight to the Food Bank.

Visiting the Food Bank

The Food Bank is located at 5200 Historic Old Hwy 90, San Antonio, TX 78227. It hosts drive-thru and walk-up food distributions — check the schedule before you go, arrive during the posted times, and have your trunk or back seat clear if it's a drive-thru event.

Distributions are typically first-come, first-served. Bringing an ID is fine if you have one, but the focus is on getting food to people, not paperwork.

Help applying for SNAP and Medicaid

The Food Bank also helps people apply for benefits like SNAP and Medicaid — and this help is free. Per the Food Bank's site, you can get live help by phone Monday–Friday, 8AM–6PM and Saturdays, 9AM–3PM, or walk in for help Monday–Friday, 8AM–5PM.
