Free Food for New & Expecting Moms in San Antonio: WIC & More (2026)

A new baby changes everything — including the grocery bill. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or raising a child under 5 in San Antonio, there's a federal program built exactly for you: Texas WIC provides free healthy food, breastfeeding help, and nutrition counseling. Over 760,000 Texas women, infants, and children use it every month. Here's who qualifies, what you get, and how to apply.
What Texas WIC gives you
WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) loads benefits onto a card you use at the grocery store, like a debit card. Your monthly food package typically includes fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, peanut butter or beans, juice, and — for infants — formula. Beyond food, WIC offers free breastfeeding classes, one-on-one nutrition counseling, and referrals to doctors and other programs. Texas recently upgraded the WIC card with a new myWIC app that lets you track benefits in real time and freeze/unfreeze your card for security.
Who qualifies
You may qualify if you are:
- Pregnant (apply as soon as you learn you're pregnant — a pregnant woman's household size counts each baby she's expecting)
- Breastfeeding a baby under 1 year old
- Postpartum (within 6 months of delivery)
- A parent, grandparent, foster parent, or guardian of a child under 5 — including dads
You must meet income guidelines — but here's the shortcut: if you're already on Medicaid, TANF, or SNAP, you automatically meet WIC's income test. And importantly: U.S. citizenship is NOT required to get WIC.
How to apply in San Antonio
- Start online at TexasWIC.org, or call 1-800-942-3678 (Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm) to find the clinic nearest you.
- Make an appointment at the clinic of your choice — for example, the Rittiman WIC Clinic (call (210) 207-4650), which even opens the 3rd Saturday of the month.
- Bring to your appointment: proof of income (pay stub, tax return, or proof you're on Medicaid/SNAP/TANF), proof of address (utility bill or rent receipt), and an ID for each person applying (birth certificate, driver's license, or immunization card).
- At the visit you'll get a quick health screening (height, weight, a finger stick for iron) and a diet review to confirm nutritional need — then your benefits start.
