Free Food for Veterans in San Antonio, All Year Long

A veteran receiving a bag of groceries from a volunteer at a San Antonio food pantry

Every November, restaurants and charities line up to feed veterans — and we track those in our Veterans Day guide. But a veteran's grocery bill shows up in March and July too. The year-round truth is simple: you don't need a veterans-only program to eat free in San Antonio. Every verified place in our directory serves the public, veterans included — and several ask for nothing at all. Here's how to use the network like a local.

Start with 2-1-1 — and say you're a veteran

The free 2-1-1 helpline (877-541-7905) answers 24/7, confidentially. Mention your service when you call: 2-1-1 specialists search food, housing, and support programs together, and can point you to help that's set aside for veterans and military families alongside the general pantries near your ZIP. Spanish-speaking help is available.

One door for food + benefits: the Food Bank

The San Antonio Food Bank's Client Services (5200 Historic Old Hwy 90; 210-431-8326) is the front door of the region's hunger-relief network. Walk in Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, and the team connects you to nearby pantries and mobile distributions — and helps with benefits applications, which matters if your SNAP or other benefits have stalled. On-site distributions use free Fresh Trak registration; staff will sign you up on the spot.

The easiest doors: no ID, no questions

If paperwork is the thing standing between you and a meal, skip it entirely:

  • Faith Kitchen at Haven for Hope (1 Haven for Hope Way) — three hot meals every day of the year, open to all, no questions asked. 210-220-2100.
  • St. Vinny's Bistro (same campus) — three hot meals daily, 365 days a year, free to anyone who walks in. 210-919-3195.
  • Communities Under the Bridge (724 Chestnut St) — hot dinner 6:00–7:00 PM every evening, all welcome. 210-569-4026.

Our no-ID guide lists every low-paperwork option we've verified.

If you're 60 or older

San Antonio's city senior centers serve a free weekday lunch to residents 60+ — a hot meal and a room full of people who get it. There are centers across the city; the directory lists each one with its phone number, so you can find the closest and call for the meal time.

November is still special

When Veterans Day approaches, the one-day offers pile up — free restaurant meals, special distributions, and community events. We verify and collect them in the Veterans Day 2026 guide each fall. For military families in general, our military families guide covers the bases-and-benefits side of the map.

You earned help — use it

Plenty of veterans skip these programs because they feel like someone else needs them more. The pantries above buy and cook for the whole neighborhood; a veteran at the table is exactly who they're for. One call to 2-1-1 or the Food Bank line, and this week's food is handled.
