Free Food in North Central San Antonio

North Central — Alamo Heights, Monte Vista, Castle Hills, and the neighborhoods around Loop 410 and US-281 — doesn't look like a place where people need food help. It is anyway: seniors on fixed incomes, service workers, and families one repair bill from trouble live here too. The honest map: no verified listing sits inside 78209 itself, but its ring — 78212, 78213, and 78216 — has some of the strongest weekly programs in the city, including two drive-throughs.

The big one: Coker Food Pantry (78216)

Coker Food Pantry at Coker Methodist Church, 231 E North Loop Rd, is one of San Antonio's largest weekly pantries — a Food Bank–designated large pantry serving about 350 families every Thursday through a drive-through distribution. Food is given out 11:00 AM–2:00 PM; registration starts at 8:00 AM and it's first come, first served. Bring a valid ID and complete their application; the pantry is income-based, free, and open to all San Antonio ZIP codes. Call 210-494-3455.

Drive-through Tuesdays: West Avenue Compassion (78213)

At 10715 West Ave, West Avenue Compassion runs a drive-through food distribution every Tuesday, 11:00 AM–1:00 PM — the parking lot opens at 8:00 AM, and regulars arrive early. Their community resource center is also open Tuesdays, 8:00 AM–1:00 PM. Call or text 210-573-2847 for details.

Saturday mornings: Sidewalk Saturday (78212)

Christ Episcopal Church's Sidewalk Saturday, at the Outreach Pavilion, 510 Belknap Pl in Monte Vista, gives out free food, clothes, and household items every Saturday, 8:30–10:30 AM — stocked with San Antonio Food Bank groceries. Everyone is welcome; no phone listed, just come.

Weekday lunch for neighbors 60+ (78216)

The Walker Ranch Senior Center, 835 W Rhapsody, serves San Antonio residents age 60 and older a free lunch on weekdays, alongside exercise, recreation, and social programs. Call 210-207-5280 for the meal time — and note the center doubles as a good place to learn what else you're eligible for.
