Free Food for College Students in San Antonio

College is expensive in every direction — tuition, rent, books — and food is often the first thing students cut. If you're a student in San Antonio running on ramen and skipped meals, there's help built for exactly your situation.
Campus food pantries exist because student hunger is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. Here's how to use them.
UTSA: the Roadrunner Pantry and Whataburger Resource Room
UTSA students with a valid UTSA ID can get free food at the Roadrunner Pantry / Whataburger Resource Room. The Main Campus pantry is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 10am–4pm, and the Downtown Campus location runs Monday–Thursday, 1–4pm.

Meal swipes, grocery pickup, and lunch kits
UTSA's program goes beyond shelves of groceries:
- Meal Share — donated meal swipes from fellow students, for eating in campus dining halls.
- Order Ahead grocery pickup — order through RowdyLink and pick up a bag of groceries on your schedule.
- Lunch kits — grab-and-go kits available at more than 20 sites across campus.
At a different school?
Many colleges run their own pantry — it just doesn't always get advertised. Check with your student affairs office or dean of students; they'll know what's available on your campus.
And campus isn't your only option. Community food pantries and hot meal programs are open to everyone, students included. Our free groceries page lists 24 pantries across San Antonio, and hot meal programs serve ready-to-eat meals with no questions asked. The free 2-1-1 Texas helpline can also point you to help near your school.
Eating well on a student budget
- Build around pantry staples. Rice, beans, oats, pasta, and peanut butter are cheap, filling, and last forever.
- Cook with roommates. One pot of beans and rice feeds four for less than one takeout meal each.
- Shop the pantry first. Before spending grocery money, see what the campus or community pantry has — then buy only what fills the gaps.
- Keep one "emergency" meal. A box of pasta and a jar of sauce on the shelf means you're never truly stuck.
Asking for help is the smart move
Using a food pantry in college isn't a sign you're failing — it's a sign you're resourceful. Every dollar you don't spend on groceries is a dollar toward rent, books, or getting through the semester. The food is there for students like you. Take it.
